The North and the South Each region in Vietnam has its own accent, sometimes so different that even Vietnamese must learn to adjust. However, the two main streams of Vietnamese language are characterized as ‘Northern’ or ‘Southern’. The main differences are: Tones: six in the North, five in the South. Accent: much more staccato in the North and more singsong in the South. Pronunciation: the letter's’ and 'r' and 'gi' are pronounced 'z' in the North and 'y' in the South. For example: the Vietnamese national costume, the “ao dai”, is pronounced “ao zai” the North and “ao yai” in the South. There are many differences in vocabulary:
